國家公園東臨太平洋 ，中央山脈 北段通過園區，園區最高點為海拔3,742公尺的南湖大山 。海拔三千公尺以上之高山寒帶地區面積約占國家公園範圍的7.2%，列名台灣百岳 的山峰共27座。一千公尺至三千公尺之溫帶山地地區約占全區78.4%，坡度 55%以上地區約占園區面積44.7%。
園區內已發現動物物種1,517種。園區至少有46種哺乳類，約占臺灣陸域哺乳動物的一半。
當地至今已發現多處遺址，於立霧溪河口右岸，太魯閣大門牌坊前100餘公尺處之上方河階地上，為鄰近國家公園計畫區的富世遺址 所在地，屬新石器時代 文化，距今已有2,000年之歷史。國家公園區內原為太魯閣族 部落分布地區，除少數部落外，其餘部落舊址多已無人居住。
「太魯閣」或「大魯閣」一詞原為賽德克族 （原歸類為泰雅族 之賽德克亞族 ）三個部落名之一。
Taroko national park
Taroko National Park is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan and was named after the Taroko Gorge, the landmark gorge of the park carved by the Liwu River. The park spans Taichung Municipality, Nantou County, and Hualien County. Taroko Gorge and its surrounding area are well known for their abundant supply of marble, leading to its nickname, "The Marble Gorge". The rock now seen in Taroko began over 200 million years ago as sediment on the bottom of the ocean. As the sediment collected, it was subject to increasingly large amounts of pressure which eventually hardened it into limestone. Over the past 100 million years, tectonic compression between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate supplied additional pressure that metamorphosed the limestone into marble. Uplifting forces from the plate collision pushed this rock above the surface of the ocean to where we see it today. The region is still being uplifted by approximately 0.5 cm (half-centimeter) per year.
石梯坪（阿美族語：Tidaan）
台灣東海岸一處旅遊景點，位在花蓮縣豐濱鄉港口村以北約2公里處，因地形呈梯狀而得名，附近則有一座漁港。石梯坪的海岸線深受海水侵蝕而變化，其所隆起的突岬，長年的侵蝕形成海蝕階梯，以及海蝕平台、海蝕溝、海蝕崖及大小壺穴等，這些都是構成「戶外地質教室」，還有珊瑚礁群提供生物棲息，吸引釣客來此垂釣捕捉漁獲。
石梯坪的地質主要是安山礫岩，若白色凝灰岩夾雜鐵質受到氧化時，色澤呈現褐紅色。受到海水的切割，石梯坪的海岸地形出現單面山的景觀，海蝕溝的發育與遠離海岸的海蝕平台也都能見到，圓狀壺穴、蠋台壺穴、複式壺穴等數量之多，媲美北海岸的野柳。
Shitiping
"Shitiping is a huge area of coastal terraces. Its landscapes include the developed sea terrain, wave-cut platforms, uplifted coral reefs, sea trenches and cliffs. The potholes in particularly are one of Taiwan's Number one sites.
Shitiping's coast is rich in coral reefs, tropical fish, intertidal zones and tide pools from potholes. A variety of seaweed, fish, shellfish and other marine life dwell here. Shitiping is a great place to observe intertidal ecology and an excellent place for diving.
Shiti Level Ground has a well-equipped campground. Stay here and enjoy the sound of the waves on a starry night. It offers a wonderful experience."
